This spunky feel-good comedy set in the Welsh countryside is sure to put a smile on your face and a high-energy punk-pop song in your head that you won’t be able to rid yourself of for days. And why would you want to? The film opens with aging punk rock star Johnny Jones (Phil Daniels) in a long, leopard print coat, running across a cow pasture to buy marijuana from a surprisingly young neighbor boy, ducking behind a herd of cows to light up his bong as the landlord calls after him for the rent money. What starts out as Johnny Jones’ wacky life is about to get a whole lot wackier. Faced with the shallow and ageist music industry that won’t recognize his recently reunited band’s latest song that’s sure to be a hit, Johnny convinces a radio station to play it when he explains it’s a song recorded by an up-and-coming youthful band from Wales. What follows is what happens when his band’s hit song, hidden behind the façade of a young hipster face, becomes an instant success – propelling the lip-synching youngsters into a spotlight neither the aging rock stars nor the wannabe juveniles are prepared for. Director Sara Sugarman’s fresh, funny, film delves into the relationship of rock star dads and their illegitimate children, the misdirection of today’s spotlight on the young rather than the talented, and the role of technology in today’s music industry. Based on true events.
Vinyl screens on Friday, January 27, at the Lobero Theater and again on Sunday, January 29, 8 a.m. at the Metro 4 and Friday, February 3, 2 p.m. at the Metro 4.
