2010 ASP World Title Contender Primetime Feature.  Bobby Martinez is setting up for a World Title run. imageBobby Martinez is from Santa Barbara, California.  He started surfing at around eight years old.  His father Bob Senior would drop him off with the Davey Smith Surf Academy.  Davey pushed Bobby into his very first wave.  Right away, people started to notice Bobby’s quick and fast surfing technique.  Bobby entered and won every amateur contest on the planet, including six times NSSA national championships. Here is Bobby surfing at age 16 at Oil Piers, a spot that is now gone.

Soon, Bobby was suddenly getting flown around the world to surf the best spots on the planet.  Bobby turned pro, but was off to a slow start.  He was stalled by injuries and distractions.  But after healing from his injury Bobby went on to win the most honored surf contest in California, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic.  He gave notice as soon as he entered the ASP tour that he would be a force to be reckoned with. He took out his mentor Occy in his first contest on the tour and would go on to win at Teahupoo

cementing rookie of the year.

Bobby was the running as an unsponsored underdog on the tour the last few years. Here is Bobby on tour and freesurfing in Meixco in 2007.

Bobby has been surfing Rincon and training with professional boxer Victor Ortez. Here Victor displays a TKO in the ring.

If Bobby was in the ring with any surfer on tour Bobby would destroy him.  Bobby is bringing that fire to ASP World tour this year.  Here’s Bobby’s version of right hook.  imageimageimage

Bobby is in prime position this year to win an ASP World Title.  He took down quite a few in the first ASP event of the year at Snapper Rocks.

He has been surfing up to three times a day to get him ready to surf as many heats as possible without becoming tired.

And with Bobby the best backside bottom turn in surfingimageimage and new sponsorship with Team Oneill it looks like this could be his year to win an ASP World Title.  image

Bobby Martinez is already bringing the fire.  image Bobby is not know for airs, but he still busts some sick ones. imageBobby kicking the fins loose. imageimageSurfing becomes skateboarding on water when you do moves like a “handplant”. imageThis is the last thing the wave sees before it pummled.  Bobby Martinez will be compleating at the Bells Beach event and with backside turns like these, and sitting at 3rd in the World he’s sure to win a few rounds by TKO, if not the whole event. imageimage

I love the video of you surfing Oil Piers at 16.  My boyfriend says he remembers you as a kid running up the beach to get another one at Sandbar and then running up again to get another one.  The thing he remembers more than anything is the great big smile you always had.  I am so stoked that you still live in SB and are such a nice guy!

PS
I love that you are a goofy footer, too!
