World Premier 180 South by Chris Malloy
Chris Malloy achieved a milestone in his life last night at the premier of 180 South. Since he started the movie three years ago he married and had a child. Completing the film was difficult because of the challenges and inherent danger of filming in remote locations. His cameraman, Danny Moder, carried a fifty-pound backpack filled with the movie cameras and still cameras. Danny Moder, director of photography, shot most of the film in Panasonic HD. Danny was downloading the footage from P2 cards between shots.
The movie 180 South was an excellent movie about following the path less traveled. It was a good departure for Chris Malloy away from surf movies and into a more narrative style of film. 180 South follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the steps of Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard down to the fabled Patagonia area of Chile. While on his journey he travels to Easter Island and surfs all by himself in very dangerous yet perfect conditions. Then he continues to his goal of climbing Patagonia Mountain in Chile. Once in Chile Jeff realizes that pulp mills and dams are destroying much of Chile. He joins forces with the local cowboys, or gauchos, as they march against the destruction of the environment. 180 South is a must see for any surfer or outdoor enthusiast and I left the theater feeling inspired to preserve the environment.
